Overview
This module provides surgeons with the opportunity to refine the way in which they teach basic and surgical anatomy to Medical Students, Foundation Year Doctors, and Surgical Trainees. They will be observed teaching anatomy and receive structured, focused and individualised feedback in order to help them enhance their skills as surgical educators.
The creation of high-quality single best answer (SBA) questions in the context of basic and surgical anatomy is also covered in this module. Learners will write their own SBA questions to demonstrate an appreciation of the core aspects they should consider when they create and use this common type of assessment.
The learner can access this static module, which is offered within the Doctors Academy Virtual Online Platform (VOP), at the time and in the place that best suit him/her. Access to the module is unlimited, and it is granted for 12 months.
A certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the module.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:
- confidently use cadaveric prosections, osteology, anatomical images, and anatomical drawings to teach basic and surgical anatomy.
- explain important basic and surgical anatomical concepts with and without visual aids.
- apply key theoretical principles to deliver effective teaching in basic and surgical anatomy.
Assessment
Learners will be assessed through:
- observation of teaching of basic and/or surgical anatomy (practical assessment).
- creation of single best answer (SBA) questions in surgical anatomy (written assessment).
Learners can teach anatomy to a relevant group of individuals (e.g., Medical Students, Foundation Year Doctors, Core Surgical Trainees) in their own hospital, record themselves, and submit the recording for the module tutors to observe. Learners for whom it is suitable and feasible will be offered the opportunity to complete the observation of teaching in a relevant anatomy course held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Cardiff, Cardiff.
