Overview
This module provides surgeons with the opportunity to enhance their ability to teach surgical skills and non-operative technical skills to Medical Students, Foundation Year Doctors, and Surgical Trainees. They will be observed teaching surgical skills and receive structured, focused and individualised feedback in order to help them refine their skills as surgical educators. They will also consider how to observe, assess, and reinforce the non-operative technical skills of their students.
The learner can access this static module, which is offered within the Doctors Academy Virtual Online Platform (VOP), at the time and in the place that best suit him/her. Access to the module is unlimited, and it is granted for 12 months.
A certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the module.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:
- demonstrate an ability to teach core components of surgical skills (e.g., dexterity, hand-eye coordination).
- confidently observe, assess and reinforce trainees’ non-operative technical skills (e.g., respect, empathy, adaptability).
- appreciate the intricacies of teaching practical skills to students who possess different degrees of competency.
- where necessary, guide students to unlearn negative habits that impede their ability to proficiently perform technical and non-technical skills.
- apply key theoretical principles to deliver effective teaching in surgical skills and non-operative technical skills.
Assessment
Learners will be assessed through:
- observation of teaching of surgical skills (practical assessment).
- written responses to situational judgement scenarios (written assessment).
Learners can teach surgical skills to a relevant group of individuals (e.g., Medical Students, Foundation Year Doctors, Core Surgical Trainees) in their own hospital, record themselves, and submit the recording for the module tutors to observe. Learners for whom it is suitable and feasible will be offered the opportunity to complete the observation of teaching in a relevant surgical skills course held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Cardiff, Cardiff.
